Good news
Thanks to a local mom's research, we have some good news on the "Teddy Bear Academy" daycare issue... Here's the email I received earlier:
Good news....I have been in contact with the City lawyer and City planner working on the Teddy Bear Academy file and it looks like Council's approval to restrict daycare facilities on High Park Avenue south of Dundas Street West will not effect the opening of the Teddy Bear Academy because the academy received an approved building permit prior to the subject Council approval. The City Planner advised me that during the year band of daycares along High Park Avenue, that further studies related to pick up/drop off, traffic and bus routes will be conducted along High Park Avenue to determine what the issues are if any and the results will be incorporating into new citywide Zoning Bylaw.

Councillor Bill Saundercook, City of Toronto, Ward 13

Dear Mr. Saundercook.
I am writing to express my disappointment with your decision to spearhead and support city council’s decision to impose a one year ban on new daycares opening up in the area of High Park Ave.
As you are well aware, this neighbourhood is full of young families with children. We need every daycare spot we can get! It is currently very difficult to get a child into a registered daycare in this neighbourhood. Parents routinely place themselves on wait-lists the minute they know they are pregnant, yet, still, no spot is available when mom or dad are ready to go back to work – often this means they have been on a wait-list for 20 months! I’m sure you will agree this is unacceptable. The needs of many many many parents in your ward outweigh the minor concerns of a few homeowners on one street.
I’d like to point out how the concerns of the homeowners are overblown:
Noise: Daycares operate during regular business hours, when most people are at work. The sound of children playing is a reasonable thing to expect to hear, between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Noise: Daycares operate during regular business hours, when most people are at work. The sound of children playing is a reasonable thing to expect to hear, between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm.
Traffic: As you know, Hig Park Ave. is one of the widest streets in the area, with a full lane of parking on either side of the street. Most homes on the street have driveways, so residents are, for the most part, are not using the street parking. Additionally, many parents will be dropping their children off while walking, biking or taking transit, thereby reducing the need for parking near the daycare.
I am upset that there was no consultation with community members, outside of the small group advocating to restrict parents’ access to daycare spots.
I urge you to reconsider your stance, and to work with a broad base of community members to devise a more appropriate solution. The parents of Ward 13 will remember this decision come election time!
Thank you,
Lindsay Viets-Moore

Impromptu Stroller March Protest today @ 4 p.m. in front of Bill Saundercook's office!
From The Toronto Star:
Toronto council has slapped an order prohibiting new day nurseries on an upscale, three-block stretch of High Park Ave. for a year, after complaints from neighbours who fear extra traffic and noisy children.
This is absolutely ridiculous, everyone who lives in this neighbourhood knows about the severe shortage of daycare spots, you have to start calling daycares to reserve a spot as soon as you pee on the stick, the wait is often 2 years-long and most people I know are on at least 5 waiting lists!
We're having a impromtu "Stroller March" protest outside the councillor's office today at 4 p.m.,
17 St. John's Road Toronto, ON M6P 1T7
Please Call Bill Saundercook's office if you'd like to comment! Phone: 416-338-5165
P.S. I just added another listing in my Local Childcare by Stay-at-Home Moms blog, the list is growing, hopefully it will help some of you who are stuck on waiting lists:

Wise Daughters Craft Market Clothing Swap raised over $500 so far!
From Mary Breen, the owner of the Wise Daughters Craft market:
Some weeks ago, I had the idea to hold a clothing swap, mostly as a recession-busting, community-building kind of event, but also as a modest fundraiser for one of my favourite local charities, The Redwood Shelter. When I put out the call for clothes, it went viral and the response went through the roof. The first week of May, Wise Daughters received a mountain of barely worn fabulous fashions. The Junction community could not have embraced the event with more enthusiasm. On May 9, despite ominous skies, torrential rain and hail earlier in the day, people ventured out to shop, shop, shop. Even at $1 per item, we raised far more money than I had ever anticipated, 100% of which goes to the shelter. There were more clothes than my wonderful volunteers could find room to display that day, so there will be a Part 2 to this effort. On June 13, the day of the 1st annual Junction-wide yard sale, Wise Daughters will put out the remaining fashion riches in front of the shop. This time, just for fun, shoppers will be able to take away as much as they can stuff into the biggest Wise Daughters paper bag for $10! Once again, all the proceeds will go to the Redwood, which needs cash donations now more than ever.
