Some info about the Redwood Women's Shelter, guest post by Mary Breen
As many of you know, the Junction Parents Group is holding a Mom2Mom Sale on May 28th to benefit the Redwood Women's Shelter, here's a bit of info on the shelter itself, submitted by Mary Breen, the owner of the Wise Daughters Craft Market and regular supporter of the shelter.
The Redwood Shelter
My indirect involvement with the Redwood Shelter near Bloor and Dundas began when my daughter started tutoring there while still in middle school, about 7 years ago. Because the Redwood welcomes women and children fleeing violence, the kids who arrive are typically uprooted from their neighbourhood schools so their abuser can’t locate them. Not only do they leave their homes, possessions and everything familiar behind, they also leave the teachers and friends they know. Safety is paramount for these families, but comes at a high price.
The Redwood provides a haven for over 300 women and children every year. Families stay an average of three months, getting the counselling, legal help and other supports they need before they can start rebuilding their lives.
The Redwood is an amazing place, free from fear and judgement. Look what your money will do:
• $30 can give a mom and new baby a special kit with all the basics a newborn needs
• $50 can provides a teen with three hours of tutoring
• $75 can feed a child three nourishing meals a day for two weeks
• $100 can provide a woman with one day of shelter and emotional support
